Cantor Kathy Robbins
What I Do

During my tenure as Cantor of Temple Solel I developed a deep understanding of the spiritual needs of the individual and the community, enriching my approach to ceremonial planning and officiation. As a professional singer and spiritual leader, I focus on using the voice as a powerful tool for healing and bridge building, creating therapeutic and uplifting experiences through music and ceremony.

Since 2010, I have been serving as Cantor for The Elijah Minyan in Carlsbad and Seacrest Village Retirement Community in Encinitas.

As Community Cantor, I provide support for unaffiliated Jewish and Interfaith families for a range of spiritual and life cycle needs, honoring diverse traditions with inclusive officiation.

Bar/ Bat Mitzvah Tutoring and Officiation

A highlight of my cantorate is Bar and Bat Mitzvah training and officiation .

I get great satisfaction from guiding a student through the learning process based upon their individual learning and life style needs. My online, virtual teaching method allows me to prepare students with no Hebrew training as well as students who already can read Hebrew but need to learn the prayers and Torah portion.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutoring component -begins following an assessment of the student’s Hebrew entry level skills and knowledge prayers and includes:

  • The Meaning of Bar/Bat Mitzvah
  • The Hebrew Reading Program (if applicable)
  • Hebrew and English Prayers
  • Torah Portion recitation
  • Mitzvah project guidance
  • Speech (drasha) writing

The Jewish Knowledge and Culture component- highlights basic and important Jewish values, teaching and vocabulary as well as salient aspects of Jewish holidays as they occur during the year.

Implementation

The program is implemented via half-hour or one hour Zoom or Face Time sessions, reinforced and enhanced by an exchange of voice recording and texted assignments between sessions as well as referral to Jewish educational internet sites.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Officiation

As I live in North San Diego County, most of my officiation is in Southern California, although I welcome discussion about traveling to a further destination.

Within San Diego County and adjacent areas I am available to officiate B’nai Mitzvah Services at a location of the family’s choosing which can include a private home, hotel, museum or synagogue. If the service is not held in a synagogue where a Torah is available, I am able to provide the use of a Torah scroll.

Family Meeting

Once we have confirmed a date and time for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Service, the first stop on your student’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah journey is our family meeting in which we get acquainted, discuss pertinent details, assess entry level Hebrew skills and basic Jewish knowledge, distribute relevant documents (Bar/Bat Mitzvah Information Sheet, Torah portion summary, Meaning of Bar/Bat Mitzvah/Tzedakah- Mitzvah Project.)

Planning the Service

While some families prefer to create their own Siddurim (Prayer Booklets) which I would oversee, I can offer the use of booklets for an Afternoon Service.

Please contact me for additional information about officiating your student’s Bar /Bat Mitzvah Service. I know I can provide the support and expertise that will create a peak, spiritual event for your student, family and community.

Family Mentoring (optional)

Suggestions for accessible and creative ways to engage Jewishly throughout the year. Providing B’nai Mitzvah participating family members with recordings of Torah verses and/or prayers.

Scheduling

Scheduling is based upon mutually chosen dates and times. Monthly schedules have flexibility to account for school breaks, family vacations and occasional changes needed by both your family and Cantor Kathy. The length and number of preparatory sessions will vary depending on Bar/Bat Mitzvah timeline and student’s entry skills.

Fees

Included in the fee structure is communication between Cantor and Student via text and voice recording to reinforce lessons, follow-up assignments and motivate progress (between Zoom or FaceTime sessions ) If Cantor Kathy officiates the Service, fee includes providing participating family members with recordings and printed text of prayers or Torah verses.

Wedding Ceremonies

Personalized and meaningful officiation for your special day.

As a 23-year member of the Reform Movement’s American Conference of Cantors, my personal spiritual nature has always been inclusive and expansive. Throughout my cantorial career, I have enjoyed and felt privileged to officiate Jewish, Interfaith, Spiritual and secular-humanist wedding ceremonies whether same sex or not.

I find great joy in meeting with couples and getting to know them as individuals and as partners. I am always eager to hear their stories and family histories, listen to their concerns and offer guidance.

It is always a pleasure for me to help plan and manifest a couple’s unique vision for their wedding ceremony, to speak words and sing songs/prayers that touch the heart and elevate the spirit. It is a great honor to help create the loving atmosphere that invites family and friends to share in a couple’s love as they speak their vows and embark on their journey through life together .

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Officiation

Guidance and preparation for these significant milestones.
